The Century Mark

Yup! One hundredth post. I know there aren’t 100 different ties like my friend Brooke over on 100 days, 100 ties. In fact Brooke has surpassed the two century mark in that regard, if I’m not mistaken. Brooke and Will over on 100 Days of Ties got me going on doing a blog about my daily getups. I hadn’t really thought about it before and it’s been pretty fun. There must be some interest in the whole dressing up thingy because I get about 10 visits a day. I think that’s pretty good since I’m not really trying very hard for that. Of course I don’t have anything to compare it to.

Looking back, one of the things that sticks with me is how many different looks I can get with a handful of suits and another handful of sport coats and a bunch of different shirts and ties. Hell, even a white shirt can be made to look a lot different when paired with various suits and ties.

And speaking of a white dress shirt, given the pinstripe suit and semi-wild necktie I really couldn’t talk myself into anything other than a white shirt. I really like the big, fat herringbone pattern on this Paul Fredrick tie. But I don’t like the fat width and monstrous knot that comes with it. So be it.

Red Stripes II

This is what I have on right here and now. Yeah, I skipped tying one on yesterday. My work yesterday included some not so clean activities so I chose to protect my nicer clothes. I find it nice that I am not required to wear coat/suit and tie. I choose to do so. Why? Dunno. Prolly something in my childhood that I should blame on my parents or something. I enjoy it. If suit and tie were required I don’t think I would enjoy it quite as much. That and I’d look like everyone else.

Today is actually a coat and tie day. Stripes and checks up top and solid, tan trousers below the bottom of the picture. The tie is another Hilfiger that I picked up the same day I nabbed the Stephen Colbert inspired blue/navy stripe.

Red Stripes I

This is Monday’s getup. It’s been a busy few days so my time budget had to be adjusted. And the fun stuff is what gets the axe first.

The necktie is a fairly old Robert Talbott Estate model. The Estate line of stuff is generally Talbott’s top of the line. As far as ties go, the Estate resides just below the seven folds. I’ve sported a few seven fold pieces over the course of the blog so far. One Talbott, one Paul Fredrick, and one Charles Tyrwhitt. There’s some lengthy discussions out on the net regarding seven folds and whether or not there really are seven folds and counting folds, etc. If you follow the link to the Tyrwhitt version, you will see that I counted six on that one. It’s not a huge concern to me but I did find several of the discussions interesting at the time I read them many years ago.

Another Mimic

Not too bad a copy, if I do say so myself. I saw the Colbert Report on Cinco de Mayo and thought his wardrobe department had put together a pretty snazzy combination. It must have been memorable because I noticed a very similar tie yesterday while I was out goofing around. Rather than delay trying it out I paired it up with a windowpane suit instead of a pinstripe. I wore the pinstripe yesterday. The other differences? I’ve got French cuffs working today and, the most obvious difference is that I finish things off with a pocket square. His wardrobe department is quite good but they do need to step it up just a bit in that regard.

The coolest similarity is that Colbert also uses a dimpled four-in-hand. Hah!

Covering All The Bases

Solid? Check!

Stripe? Check!

Dots? Check!

Check? Check!

Four different patterns. The stripes on the suit and the dots on the necktie are at least in the same family – the pin family.

The TM Lewin shirt is probably my favorite. I have no idea why it is but for whatever reason it appeals to me. The way I see it, there are far more important things to wonder about. The tie is labeled Best of Class by Robert Talbott. It falls very short of any kind of best. The lining is terribly thin and responsible for the kink in the right side (left side of picture) of the knot. In my opinion, anyway. I purchased it at a Nordstrom Rack on the cheap. In some cases you get what you pay for.
